Prince George was born on July 22, 2013 and is the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The prince was born weighing eight pounds, six ounces in the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital – the same venue as his father Prince William and uncle Prince Harry. Prince William and Catherine broke with royal tradition and introduced George to large crowd of fans and members of the press outside the hospital. George became third in line to the British throne after his father Prince William and grandfather Prince Charles following his birth. It marked the first time since the reign of Queen Victoria that three generations in direct line to the throne had been alive at the same time.

The prince’s birth was celebrated across Britain and the Commonwealth as he is likely to be a future monarch. George was christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury at St James’s Palace in 2013 and has seven godparents – including Prince William’s cousin Zara Tindall as well as friends of his parents Emilia Jardine-Paterson and William van Cutsem. Prince George accompanied his parents on a three-week tour of Australia and New Zealand in April 2014 and was described as “the star of the show” by the BBC. At home, George made his first appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony following the Trooping the Colour parade to mark Queen Elizabeth’s birthday in June 2015. The royal also met then US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in April 2016. George greeted the couple in a dressing gown, prompting the President to joke that the prince had “clearly breached protocol”.

Prince George became a big brother when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed Princess Charlotte in May 2015. The royal couple then had a second son, Prince Louis, in April 2018. The prince’s formal education began at the age of two in January 2016 at the Westacre Montessori School Nursery in Norfolk, near his family’s country residence Anmer Hall. He started primary school in 2017 at Thomas’s School in Battersea, London and has since been joined there by his sister Princess Charlotte. In 2022, Prince George reportedly had a trial day at a school close to Windsor amid rumours that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were planning to relocate to Catherine’s childhood home of Berkshire.
A Prominent Royal

As the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, Prince George joined his siblings to applaud key workers in the UK for their efforts during the global crisis. The prince held a cake sale to raise money for the Tusk Trust, a charity of which is father is the patron. The royal children also met legendary naturalist Sir David Attenborough and asked him questions about the natural world, with George presented with a fossilised giant tooth from an extinct shark by the broadcaster during a visit in September 2020. George – alongside Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – made his first red carpet appearance in December 2020 as they attended a pantomime in London to thank key workers for their efforts in the pandemic.

Prince George has inherited several of his father’s passions and is a big fan of helicopters as the royal appeared to be very excited as he explored some choppers during a trip to Germany in 2017. Prince William – who served as helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force – also joked that George would “never forgive” him if he didn’t bring back a toy helicopter following a visit to an Air Ambulance Charity in 2019. George also seems to have inherited William’s passion for the environment as in 2021, the prince claimed that his son is “annoyed” by the state of the planet.

He attended two England matches at Wembley Stadium during Euro 2020 and went through an emotional rollercoaster as the national team were beaten by Italy in the final. George has also been at a Six Nations rugby match between England and Wales at Twickenham and the Wimbledon men’s singles final in 2022.

Prince George made several appearances as his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth celebrated her Platinum Jubilee – 70 years on the British throne – in 2022. The prince and his sister Charlotte made their first official visit to Wales with their parents as part of the Jubilee celebrations. George was also present at the Platinum Party at the Palace and the Platinum Jubilee Pageant and joined Queen Elizabeth and other members of his family as the historic celebrations drew to a close.
