Ferrari’s New 296 GT3 Is Full Of F1 Inspired Technology

Ferrari is a company with a lot on its plate at the moment. First, it had to design as competitive a car as possible for Formula 1’s new 2022 rules, and try to make it more reliable. It is currently testing its new hypercar ahead of its return to the top level of sports car racing in the World Endurance Championship in 2023. And now, Ferrari has unveiled its new 296 GT3 racer, a totally new interpretation of the mid-engine race car, and a car set to do battle with the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 R and the Audi R8 V10 LMS.

Ferrari unveiled the new car ahead of the 24 Hours of Spa, and the car is set to make its debut in the 2023 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona. This new Ferrari is competing in the new set of GT3 regulations for the IMSA series, the WEC and other championships such as the European Le Mans Series. Like its previous racers, the new car will also be available to customer teams and around five or six are also expected to debut at Daytona. But there is a lot more to this car than just a fancy new exterior.

The 296 GT3 Is Inspired By Formula 1 Technology

Ferrari have taken what they know from Formula 1 and implemented some of it into this new GT3 racer. The biggest evidence of this is with the front and rear bodywork. These can both be easily removed in one piece, much like with an F1 rear wing or front wing, the latter of which would get changed in a race were it damaged. Both ends of the 296 GT3 are also built onto detachable subframes which eases maintenance on the racer. These changes make the car easier to run and work on.

The completely modular design is a bit of a game changer for Ferrari GT3 cars but one that should really help the Scuderia. As Ferdinando Cannizzo, head of Ferrari’s GT car track development said, “What we looked at in the beginning was how the prototypes and Formula 1 are doing that. We just copied that.” There are plenty of other changes too, with the roll cage on the car now integrated with the chassis to help improve both the cabin space and the visibility as well. And that isn’t all that’s new here either.

Under The Hood Of The 296 GT3

There is plenty to get excited about regarding what is under the hood of the Ferrari. The 296 GT3 has a Ferrari F163 120-degree 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine powering it, and it is also capped at 592 hp subject to the FIA’s Balance of Performance regulations. The Ferrari gets all of this power without any hybrid assistance as well. Transmission wise, it is a new one from XTrac and it is a single-clutch six-speed transmission, which Ferrari has mounted transversely to help keep packaging as tight as possible around the rear axle. The clutch itself is electronically actuated via the steering wheel.

Ferrari have really gone to town on the aero for the car as well. Ride height sensitivities are now reduced, which in theory will improve handling and driveability of the car and this will yield an extra 20% of downforce over the previous generation of GT3 racers. That is highly impressive stuff. Given how close GT racing in sports cars can often be, it’s no surprise to see Ferrari really try to eke out as much downforce as they possibly can with their latest GT creation. The competition from the likes of Porsche will no doubt be very strong.

Ferrari Has Developed An Entirely New Chassis

Of course, Ferrari have learned from the experience of the 488 GT3, but they have not simply put new bodywork on a 488 chassis. The 296 GT3 has an entirely new chassis, made of aluminum. The 296 GT3 should not only be fun and also quite easy to drive, but the hope from Ferrari is that the car can take advantage of the grip levels of the tires without them being totally destroyed in just a few laps, and Ferrari’s have been great on their tires over the last few years particularly in endurance racing.

The 296 GT3 Is An Incredible Looking Car

Forgetting all the technical information momentarily, the Ferrari 296 GT3 is an incredible looking car. The exterior is incredible with the huge rear wing at the back, and the aggressive aero at the front with the turning vanes and splitter make this look a truly menacing Ferrari racer. It’s possible that this is one of the best looking Ferrari GT cars we have ever seen, and it’ll look even better when it is out on track in 2023. Customers will be able to order the 296 GT3 via a new configurator in Maranello as well as at Ferrari dealerships in 2023.
